I hardly imagined 40 years ago that I would someday, somehow become a writer. And, ten books later, it looks like that is exactly what’s happened. Along the way I grew from my training in modern French history to my current work in American and African American studies. The three major books I co-authored with Will Scott, my closest friend and collaborator, mark the trail of this journey—New School, New York Modern, and Fly Away.
At about mid-point of this journey I thought to try to tell some stories and here too the trajectory tells my history from semi-autobiographical camp stories (Cooperstown Chronicles) to Negro League baseball (Shadow Ball) to my most recent evocation of the 1960s (Irish Eyes).
